Our empathy-filled town halls invite you to turn strangers into friends and to connect your shared purpose with the allies who will help you commit to take action.

Join community groups, activists, and everyday people seeking to strengthen our communities and provide a foundation for progress. We invite you to join your neighbors in face-to-face dialogue to build trust, connection, and commitment that leads to action. Together, we will define our community’s shared values and forge a plan for the future.

“The Purpose Power Town Hall was one of the most refreshing and exciting civic experiences I’ve had in [my city]. At a time when the world seems more divided than ever, it was great to meet people from across the city, to find common ground, and to envision ways to build relationships and make a better community for everyone.”

Bernie, NYC

“The Purpose Power Town Hall was everything I didn't know I needed. Alicia dares you to get vulnerable, be courageous, be creative, and dream bigger than the world around us tends to let you. Definitely the wake-up call and energizing experience I needed to dive headfirst into the next chapter of my life!”

Josh, DC

Event Agenda

Part 1: MAKE MEANINGFUL CONNECTIONS

Unlike typical “town halls” that focus on elected leaders, this event invites you to engage with others. You will discover shared values that will form the basis of lasting connections with new allies.

Part 2: IMAGINE FUTURE POSSIBILITIES

Join group discussions with those who share your values to discover opportunities to be more deeply engaged. We also invite you to translate your individual convictions into collective commitment to take action in both big and small ways to create change. Our aspiration: active citizenship for everyone.

Part 3: COMMIT TO TAKE ACTION

Conversations are just the start. When we find others who share our conviction for the future, we can commit to take meaningful future action. We inspire you to make actionable commitments to how you will personally lead change in your communities. By voicing our commitments aloud, we create a container of accountability to inspire sustained engagement

Why we’re partnering with SAM in Hartford

The Hartford Town Hall on May 11 is our first time hosting a co-sponsored event. We’re partnering with SAM, a new political party for Americans who are tired of choosing between the lesser of two evils.

We know some of you might be curious about this choice: Isn’t Purpose Power nonpartisan? Indeed we are.

SAM’s mission is to build a new party focused on people and participation. Their platform is focused on systemic changes like voting rights, campaign finance, and gerrymandering reforms that give more people more power over politics. Like us, they are excited to help people strengthen their conviction to use politics to create a better future.

Often our political conversations are overtaken by elections: Who will win and who will lose? The Purpose Power town hall isn’t a political rally focused on a specific candidate or campaign. It’s a chance to come together and listen with curiosity and compassion to people with different views and experiences. We are excited to welcome people of all political persuasions to come together to explore our shared values and our collective vision for the future.

We believe civic engagement spans beyond voting. That’s why we are committed to creating spaces that encourage us to build community, to talk to people who are different, to use empathy to connect to our common humanity, to plan for a future that is better than the current reality.

Purpose Power is led by Alicia Bonner Ness, the author of the new book Purpose Power: How Mission-Driven Leaders Engage for Change. She works to engage communities directly in re-imagining the future of politics in Brooklyn and beyond. Alicia believes that to change our current reality, we can’t fight against the current system. We have to create a new model that makes the existing obsolete.
